Tests and analyses for the Energy Oil & Gas sector

In our energy testing activities, we assess the resistance and reliability of materials used in extreme conditions, such as corrosive environments and high pressures.

The production of electricity through renewable sources plays a fundamental role in the future of the planet, where reducing CO2 emissions is one of the paths towards environmental sustainability, and generally involves all those uses where the combustion of fossil fuels would be necessary. Our team supports the customer in the study and research of innovative materials, in identifying the causes of failure and in the research and testing of new materials.

In the field of energy testing, we analyse the resistance and functionality of components and materials by exposing them to extreme environmental conditions, accelerated ageing and mechanical stress. Thanks to a wide range of analytical tools, we perform chemical and physical characterisation of materials to evaluate their properties. In addition, we analyse the causes of breakages or malfunctions, identifying critical issues in the product or component through failure analysis.

Applications

From internal combustion engines to electric and hydrogen engines, from infotainment to interior trim, the Pontlab team supports customers with experience and expertise to carry out tests that guarantee product reliability.

01 Oil & Gas

Oil & Gas has always played a key role in the global industry for the generation of electricity, which requires maximum safety and reliability of materials. Production continuity requires the use of products that can withstand extreme conditions and maintain performance over long periods of time. Our energy testing activities aim to anticipate the occurrence of potential critical issues and component failures by analysing the presence of surface defects or inclusions with the aid of SEM electron microscopy, metallographic analysis and modern technologies such as industrial computed tomography and 3D laser scanning. All energy testing is carried out in a modern laboratory dedicated to stress corrosion, through stress corrosion cracking in sour gas or slow strain rate, death weight and proof ring tests, salt spray, in accordance with NACE, ISO or ASTM standards. Pontlab is the first laboratory in Italy, and one of the few in Europe, to have obtained Accredia accreditation for the execution of slow strain rate testing in sour gas according to NACE TM0198 and ASTM G129 standards.

02 LIQUID NATURAL GAS (LNG)

The increased demand for electricity requires research into new fuels, such as hydrogen and ammonia. These gases require the study and use of new materials suitable for the construction of storage tanks and distribution pipes.

03 PHOTOVOLTAIC

The demand for energy production from renewable sources requires the development of panels that are increasingly efficient and reliable over time. To guarantee performance, all system components (inverters, accessories, wiring) must be tested to withstand harsh weather conditions and atmospheric agents through specific laboratory tests.

04 WIND

Wind turbines and micro wind turbines convert wind energy into electricity: a type of clean energy that can also be supplied at night or in winter. The functionality of the system must be guaranteed by laboratory tests that simulate the effect of atmospheric agents, in order to confirm the durability of the product.

05 HYDROGEN

The increased demand for electricity requires research into new systems for the construction, transport and storage of substances such as hydrogen and ammonia. Hydrogen embrittlement of steels is a long-known phenomenon, and research and study into new materials and their compatibility with the carrier is therefore becoming increasingly important.
