Non-destructive testing (also referred to as NDT testing) involves techniques used to inspect and evaluate the quality and integrity of a material, component, or structure without damaging it or altering its functionality. NDT testing is essential in industrial sectors where it is crucial to ensure the safety, reliability, and durability of components without compromising their use or having to destroy them for analysis.

Non-destructive testing allows for quick, accurate, and cost-effective inspections and is commonly used in maintenance and quality control in many industries, including automotive, aerospace, rail, construction, and energy. The examination can be performed on a wide variety of materials such as steel, aluminum and magnesium alloys, brass and bronze, titanium, plastics, and composites.

Our main non-destructive tests

We carry out a wide range of non-destructive tests to ensure the reliability of components, identifying defects without compromising their functionality.

01 Fluorescent Penetrating Liquids

The fluorescent penetrant method is a non-destructive test used to detect surface discontinuities on metallic and non-metallic materials, such as cracks, porosity, or crazing. The test is based on the application of a low surface tension fluorescent liquid that penetrates the discontinuities and is then illuminated with black light (Wood's lamp) to make the defects visible. This non-destructive analysis is effective on smooth, non-porous surfaces and is widely used in the aerospace, automotive, oil & gas, and energy sectors to check welds, castings, and critical components, ensuring the structural integrity of components. We have an inspection system with tanks measuring 700x700x500 mm, with the possibility of performing tests with post-emulsifiable fluorescent penetrating liquids in accordance with the main standards of the relevant sectors.

02 Contrast Penetrating Fluids

Similar to the fluorescent penetrant technique, the contrast method is a non-destructive analysis that uses a red liquid visible to the naked eye, rather than under UV light. After applying the penetrant to the surface discontinuities of the piece and removing the excess liquid, an absorbent powder detector highlights the defects, making them clearly visible. In particular, this non-destructive test is used in the mechanical, shipbuilding, and railway industries to check the quality of non-ferromagnetic materials, accurately highlighting any surface discontinuities, even very small ones, such as cracks, porosity, and folds.

03 Industrial Computed Tomography

Industrial computed tomography (industrial CT X-ray scan) is a non-destructive diagnostic method that uses X-rays to obtain three-dimensional images of the inside and outside of a component, identifying any defects such as porosity, discontinuities, and deformations. With this type of inspection, it is possible to examine any material without disassembling or dissecting it, in order to detect any defects that may compromise the use of the part. Pontlab has chosen Baker Hughes GE V TOME X M 300, which combines the advantages of industrial tomography with metrological measurement accuracy.

04 Magnetic particles (MT)

Non-destructive testing with magnetic particles is a versatile and reliable technique for checking welds, castings, or forgings, detecting surface or subsurface cracks in ferromagnetic materials. The test is performed by magnetizing the component and causing the ferrous particles applied to the surface to accumulate at the discontinuities, making the defects visible.
