Dimensional checks and reverse engineering

Dimensional checks and reverse engineering allow you to verify the geometric conformity of a component and reconstruct its digital model for analysis and redesign.

Dimensional checks allow the geometric characteristics of parts, components, and finished products to be verified, ensuring compliance with technical drawings, tolerances, and design specifications. These high-precision dimensional measurements are carried out using instruments such as coordinate measuring machines (CMMs), digital calipers, profile projectors, and advancedOptical systems.

Reverse engineering processes allow the geometry of an existing component to be captured and transformed into a 3D digital model. This method is indispensable for structural analysis, design modifications, recreating models of everyday objects or unique artifacts, and designing components that are no longer available. The sectors involved in dimensional checks and reverse engineering include automotive, aerospace, shipbuilding, precision mechanics, and industrial design.

01 3D dimensional testing

3D dimensional control verifies the geometric conformity of a component with respect to technical drawings, ensuring that tolerances and specifications are met. This analysis highlights any critical areas, and in particular the actual deviation of the object from the design specifications. We perform 3D dimensional testing using various techniques, both contact and non-contact, acquiring the object via 3D laser scanning or tomographic scanning. The result of the scan, or contact measurements, is compared with the 3D CAD model provided by the customer. This test is essential for quality control in the automotive, aerospace, and manufacturing industries.

02 Reverse Engineering

Reverse engineering allows the 3D digital model of a component to be reconstructed from a physical object. This technology is used for structural analysis, redesign and production of objects that are no longer available, to replicate unique artifacts and for mechanical design. The reverse engineering process involves 3D laser scanning or industrial tomography to obtain a detailed CAD model that allows the surfaces of any object to be reconstructed in a very short time. This model facilitates the creation of prototypes or molds for pre-series production in different materials, thereby reducing the product's time-to-market. Reverse engineering is used in a wide range of applications, not only industrial, and is now indispensable for redesigning and recreating models of everyday objects, replicating unique artifacts, and mechanical design of components and finished products (motorcycles, cars, scooters, boats, etc.).

03 Industrial Computed Tomography

Industrial computed tomography (industrial CT X-ray scan) is a non-destructive diagnostic method that uses X-rays to obtain three-dimensional images of the inside and outside of a component, identifying any defects such as porosity, discontinuities, and deformations. With this type of inspection, it is possible to examine any material without disassembling or dissecting it, in order to detect any defects that may compromise the use of the part. Pontlab has chosen Baker Hughes GE V TOME X M 300, which combines the advantages of industrial tomography with metrological measurement accuracy.

04 3D laser scanning

3D laser scanning is one of the reverse engineering technologies used to quickly and accurately capture the geometry of complex components and surfaces, generating point clouds and digital models. We perform 3D laser scanning with an anthropomorphic arm: an advanced technology for capturing three-dimensional data from objects or surfaces in a precise and detailed manner. The use of the anthropomorphic arm allows us to scan objects of various sizes and geometries, even those that are complex and difficult to reach. This combination of robotic arm and laser scanner is used in various industrial sectors for reverse engineering, quality control, rapid prototyping, and dimensional testing applications.
