The types of Mixed Flowing Gases (MFG) environmental tests, also known as Noxious Gas tests or Harmful Gas Tests, simulate prolonged exposure of materials to particularly aggressive atmospheric conditions in the laboratory, characterised by the presence of corrosive gases such as chlorine (Cl2), hydrogen sulphide (H2S), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and sulphur dioxide (SO2) at controlled concentrations.

Tests are necessary to fine-tune innovative solutions for products and components across various application sectors.

The main tests Mixed Flowing Gases (MFG)

Pontlab performs Mixed Flowing Gases tests through multiple environmental tests in a climatic chamber, on single or multiple gases and under different conditions.

01 Single gas

This test evaluates the resistance of materials to a specific corrosive gas (H₂S, SO₂, NO₂ or Cl₂) to identify their vulnerability. It is a test used for electronic and metal components in targeted environments.

DIN 40046-37IEC 60068-2-60

02 Two Gas Test

This test simulates moderately aggressive industrial environments by combining two corrosive gases, such as H₂S + SO₂ or NO₂ + Cl₂. It is a useful test for evaluating the deterioration of electrical contacts and connectors.

IEC 60068-2-60ASTM B827

03 Four Gas Test

This test exposes materials to a controlled mixture of H₂S, SO₂, NO₂ and Cl₂, reproducing extreme conditions of accelerated atmospheric corrosion. It is a widely used test for electronics and automotive applications.

IEC 60068-2-60 Method 4

04 Combined tests with humidity and temperature cycles

These tests alternate exposure to gases with variations in temperature and humidity, simulating real environments and climatic cycles that accelerate degradation. These tests are essential for electronics and automotive applications.

Norme di riferimento IEC 60068-2-60ASTM B845

05 Specific tests for the automotive industry

Defined by BMW, FCA and Volkswagen, these tests evaluate corrosion in vehicles exposed to gases from emissions and road environments. They are essential tests for component type approval.

GS 95024-3 (BMW)CS.00056 (FCA)VW80000 (VW)

06 ASTM B845 test (Classification of exposure conditions)

This test classifies the test conditions for metallic materials and electrical contacts, evaluating oxidation and loss of conductivity in controlled corrosive environments.
